The world is travelling more than ever. In 2025, international arrivals reached a record of about 1.54 billion, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, and UN Tourism counted 4% growth over 2024. The OECD describes the outlook for 2027 as positive. For Canadians, though, 2027 travel comes with new paperwork, shifting habits and a few things worth checking before you book.
Below is what to check before you go. And to start the year well, we are taking 10% off the base fare of your airport ride, up to $25, with the code CANADA2027: book until January 14, 2027, for a pickup on January 1, 2027 or later.

How Canadians are travelling
- Fewer trips south. Statistics Canada reports that Canadians made 10.6% fewer trips to the United States in the first quarter of 2026 than a year earlier. Trips picked up again in mid-2026, but July 2026 was still 25.6% below July 2024.
- More travel at home. Destination Canada says more Canadians are choosing to holiday in Canada, keeping an estimated $4.4 billion of travel spending in the country between 2025 and 2027.
- The rest of the world is busy. The U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office expects 74.1 million international visitors to the United States in 2027. Popular places will be crowded and booked early.
Rules and documents to check
- United Kingdom: since February 25, 2026, Canadians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before flying to the U.K. Apply online before you book your flight.
- Europe (Schengen area): the EU's new entry system takes your fingerprints and photo at the border instead of stamping your passport. The separate travel authorisation, ETIAS, has no start date yet: as of October 2026 the EU had not announced one. Check the official EU page before a 2027 trip; the EU says it will give several months' notice.
- United States: Canadians staying 30 days or more must register with U.S. authorities. Snowbirds, plan this before you leave.
- Flight delays: a new U.S. rule changes how U.S. airlines report delays and cancellations for disruptions from January 1, 2027. Canada's own air passenger rules are being rewritten, but no start date has been set; for now the current Air Passenger Protection Regulations still apply to flights in and out of Canada.
- Your passport: check the expiry date. Many countries want it valid for months after you return.
Follow the Government of Canada's travel advice
Before you book, and again before you leave, read the Travel Advice and Advisories for your destination on travel.gc.ca. Each country has a risk level, entry rules, health information and safety notes, and they can change at any time. Also sign up for Registration of Canadians Abroad (free) so the government can reach you in an emergency, and buy travel health insurance: your provincial plan covers very little outside Canada.
What's changing at Toronto Pearson
Pearson is in the middle of a decade-long modernization called Pearson LIFT. Work on airfield systems and baggage started in May 2026, and in July 2026 the airport launched a $1.5 billion upgrade of Terminals 1 and 3: gates, check-in and security areas, and customs and immigration. The airport stays open throughout, with work done in phases, so expect some walking detours and changing signs in 2027. Check your terminal and give yourself extra time.
Ways to save on 2027 trips
- Book early for peak dates: March Break, summer and the holidays fill up first.
- Count the extra costs: travel authorisations, checked bags, seat selection, airport parking and travel insurance can add hundreds of dollars to a cheap fare.
- Compare the drive to the airport: add up a week of airport parking and compare it with a fixed-price ride there and back. A ride from Oshawa to Pearson is $96 one way.
- Watch the dollar: if you are paying in another currency, use a card without foreign transaction fees.
- Stay flexible: flying mid-week or a day earlier can save more than any coupon.
